The Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO) at the University of Greifswald explores the history, present, and future challenges of northeastern Europe, focusing on the Baltic Sea region. Research Focus: IFZO fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers from humanities, social and natural sciences, theology, and medicine. Our work is organized into four key research streams: Climate and Sea: Investigating ecological and climatic changes in the Baltic Sea region, this stream aims to develop environmental protection strategies and monitor ecological transformations to preserve the region's unique ecosystem. Politics and Security: Analyzing geopolitical dynamics and security challenges, research in this stream contributes to the development of security strategies and international cooperation, highlighting the Baltic Sea region's geopolitical significance. Democracy and Society: This stream examines social and political structures, as well as healthcare in the Baltic Sea region. The goal is to enhance quality of life and promote democratic structures to address societal challenges. Culture and Heritage: Focusing on preserving and promoting cultural heritage, this stream supports the transmission of cultural values that contribute to the Baltic Sea region's cultural diversity. IFZO's comprehensive approach integrates scientific insights with practical measures, promoting collaboration among various stakeholders.
