About IGAD Youth & Land Program

Formed in 1996 IGAD, superseded the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) with a mandate to cover political and economic issues within the region through the strategy pillars: (i)Food security and environmental protection,(ii)Conflict prevention and national resource utilization and (iii)Macro-economic policies, cooperation and integration. Land remains a core resource and theme within the three pillars of the region. Jointly the Africa Land policy centre with the IGAD secretariat formed the IGAD Land Governance Project. Through this program, the IGAD Land Governance Project is focused on mainstreaming youth inclusive and centred governance among other vulnerable groups for development and socio-economic prosperity. The program is a result of a myriad of issues significant to the IGAD region, among which include an over 50 % young population with limited skills and access to resources. This youth-focused program aims at Creating, Disseminating, Mobilising, and Engaging a youth network to produce and promote youth-centered/inclusive Land Governance for sustainable partnerships and development.
