About Indigenous Gathering Place Society of Calgary

In the heart of Calgary, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet, a transformative project is taking shape: The Indigenous Gathering Place at the Confluence. This unique space is set to be the first in the city devoted exclusively to Indigenous peoples' ceremonial practices—a place where culture, spirituality, and community converge. Our vision for 2027 is to create a sacred venue that serves as the epicenter for sharing, healing, connecting, and celebrating the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures. The Indigenous Gathering Place will be a culturally safe environment where urban Indigenous Peoples can nurture their spiritual, emotional, cultural, and social well-being. Aligned with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #21, our initiative represents a vital step in supporting the needs of Indigenous Peoples in Calgary. We are dedicated to preserving Indigenous practices and languages, and honoring the wisdom of Elders, facilitating a legacy of knowledge that bridges generations. Founded in 2018, The Indigenous Gathering Place Society of Calgary is an independent, Indigenous-led non-profit organization guided by the wisdom of Elders. We are committed to establishing this space that honours Treaty 7 and welcomes urban Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous people. Our work embodies the principle of ethical space, integrating Indigenous and Western approaches to foster mutual understanding and respect. In collaboration with local Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous-serving organizations, and governmental partners, we are dedicated to making this sacred space a reality.
