About Immigrant Home English Learning Program
Immigrant Home English Learning Program empowers immigrant families by providing individualized, in-home English language education and tools for effective navigation of our community. Our classes take place in one-on-one settings between volunteer tutors and students. This provides the opportunity for a unique relationship between volunteers, students and their families. Individualized lessons allow us to work with the particular goals and needs of each student. Success is not defined solely by our own metrics but by each student's progress toward his or her goals. Together, weekly successes are celebrated, empowering students to achieve long-term goals. Classes are one hour, twice a week in the student's home, and are scheduled around volunteer availability and location. Tutors enjoy seeing student process and making a direct impact. IHELP equips students to navigate the community with increased independence. Learning English has increased students' confidence in communicating with medical personnel, navigating children's schools and activities, and going shopping alone. We also provide curriculum and tutoring for the U.S. Citizenship Exam. IHELP celebrated our 25th Anniversary in 2020. In our 25 years of service over 1,300+ students have been served by 1,200+ volunteers with over 95K+ hours of learning all at $0 cost to the students. In 2020, we successfully pivoted in-home service to virtual classes to provide ongoing learning for the students in our program. The program continues to operate in a hybrid format, offering both in-person and virtual classes. In 2022, IHELP merged with the English Tutoring Project to form our new Youth Program.
