About IITA BBEST Project
Known for its economic and environmental benefits, the Black Soldier Fly turns organic waste into economically viable products: larvae, used in animal feed production and frass used in vegetable production. It is implemented by the BSF for Bio Circular Economy and Environmental Sustainability BBEST, an IITA -led project in Ghana, Mali Niger and DR Congo. The overall objective the BBEST project is to improve the livelihoods of smallholder chicken, fish, pig, and vegetable producers, and other value chain actors and contribute to improved urban sanitation and climate change mitigation. This will be achieved through the development of operational models to demonstrate the profitability of using organic waste to produce black soldier fly larvae, for incorporation into livestock and fish feed, and use as organic fertilizer in agriculture.
