Das Institut für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung (IKG) wurde 1996 in Bielefeld gegründet, um eine Lücke in der interdisziplinären Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung zu schließen. Heute zählt das IKG zu den führenden deutschen Forschungseinrichtungen auf diesem Gebiet. Ziel ist die Erforschung politisch und gesellschaftlich relevanter Phänomene rund um Konflikte und Gewalt sowie deren Auswirkungen auf sozialen Zusammenhalt, Partizipation, Demokratie und Frieden. Das IKG betont seine Verantwortung im Beitrag zu sozialen und politischen Diskursen und pflegt einen fortwährenden Dialog zwischen Wissenschaft und Zivilgesellschaft.
Das Institut ist strukturell eine universitäre Querschnittseinrichtung, das mit verschiedenen Fakultäten kooperiert, darunter Erziehungswissenschaft, Soziologie, Geschichte, Rechtswissenschaft und Psychologie. Forschungsprojekte zu Konflikt und Gewalt sind vielfältig und in einem umfassenden Netzwerk mit akademischen und nicht-akademischen Partnern auf lokaler, nationaler und globaler Ebene eingebettet.
