Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of Italy’s public theaters. Based in Trieste, and founded in 1954, it offers a wide program of guest shows including plays, musicals, ballet, pop and classical concerts. It also produces new shows for touring in Italy and abroad. Recent productions include new stagings of classics by William Shakespeare (Hamlet, King Lear, Othello), Euripides (Agamennones, Coephores), Sophocles (Oedipus Rex), Bertolt Brecht (Galileo), Carlo Goldoni (La Guerra, La bottega del caffè), Arthur Schnitzler (Scandalo), Italo Svevo (La Rigenerazione), as well as contemporary works by Claudio Magris (La Mostra, Lei dunque capirà), Rainer Werner Fassbinder (Das Kaffeehaus), Giuseppe Manfridi and Guido Chiarotti (La domanda della regina), Furio Bordon (La notte dell’angelo) and Simone Cristicchi (Magazzino 18, broadcast by RaiUno with over 1 million viewers). Teatro Stabile has been managed by the Italian theater director Paolo Valerio since 2021. Teatro Stabile operates the Politeama Rossetti: in its two halls (the main auditorium, 1500-seat Sala Assicurazioni Generali, and the studio theatre, 128-seat Sala Bartoli) it hosts over 70 shows each season. Each season the theatre sells between 100 and 180.000 tickets, making Trieste one of the top theatrical cities in Italy. Besides its producing activity, the theatre is particularly active in the guest performances field in the two theaters it operates in Trieste, hosting over 250 guest performances each year. Shows include plays, drama, ballets, contemporary dance, concerts and musicals. The guest companies arrive from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States of America, Argentina, Israel, France, Germany, Slovenia, Hungary and Russia. The theatre has a strong subscribers base, which generates approximately 50% of its total box office revenue.
