Imperfect Pixels

Imperfect Pixels is an interactive art exhibition, a lecture/educational series, and a way to raise funds for local organizations working to address racial equity and social justice. Once a member of the Black community is killed, a person’s imperfections surface as justification and the reality of who that person was becomes distorted. Someone who was once existed as a student, a son, a mother, a minister, an activist, a friend, or a jogger, suddenly becomes recategorized as a thug or a threat. Their life becomes an inverted version as their lives are cut short. This work consists of pixelated images that only become clear to the viewer upon closer examination. These are portraits of untold lost potential and you are asked to pause and reflect. The reality is that there is no perfect person, but there is a difference between a flawed person and a broken system. Personal flaws should not be a death sentence as they are in the Black community. Interactions with police should not require a perfect performance to elude death. Media outlets plaster images of lost brothers and sisters across all its channels with unfair distortions that become their legacy. With Imperfect Pixels, artist Travis Sheridan is asking us to slow down and remember the Black lives lost and their unrealized futures cut short. The Black community is losing its future leaders, doctors, politicians, fathers, mothers, friends, advocates, and teachers. Each three-month exhibition of Imperfect Pixels includes nine pieces including a large piece relevant to a life lost in the host city.
