IMPRS-PHDS - International Max Planck Research School for Population, Health and Data Science

IMPRS-PHDS has been running since 2019, and strives to excel in training the next generation of population scientists who are prepared to address the grand demographic challenges that we face in order to advance the well-being of people and populations. It focuses on improving the education and training of junior scientists by (i) bringing together scholars and students from different disciplines to tackle important problems for our society; (ii) fostering innovative use of data, including combining traditional and new sources, or linking separate data sets; (iii) leveraging methodological innovation to improve demographic theory. The curriculum is targeted to pre-doctoral students entering the School with a Master’s degree or equivalent. IMPRS-PHDS admits about 17 doctoral students per year: about 7 “core” students in Rostock and about 10 students from the partner institutions. These students benefit from an enhanced training experience including advanced coursework, an apprenticeship model guided by an interdisciplinary team of mentors, and mechanisms for exchange and professional development for students and scholars across leading international institutions.
