India Ghost Project

The India Ghost Project is an independent, interdisciplinary research initiative exploring how paranormal beliefs shape—and are shaped by—India’s urban and rural landscapes. Blending anthropology, economics, and cultural studies, we examine the informal economies, spatial politics, and social meanings behind ghosts, hauntings, and spiritual practices. Our mixed-methods research includes fieldwork, surveys, oral histories, and crowdsourced narratives, resulting in one of the first archives of its kind in South Asia. Through this work, we aim to make visible how fear, memory, and belief intersect with modernity, infrastructure, and identity. We welcome collaborations with researchers, institutions, artists, and storytellers who share our curiosity about the spectral dimensions of everyday life.
