Institut de l'Océan

"Institut de l'Océan" (The Ocean Institute) is the Alliance Sorbonne University's response to political ambitions and vital challenges of ocean knowledge. The Ocean Institute brings together 1,500 academics, scholars, engineers and technicians who work on the oceans within the Alliance Sorbonne University in nearly thirty laboratories. It is thus the largest marine research university in Europe. The Ocean Institute is interdisciplinary, the research and education programmes conduted by the institute cover many disciplines related to the Ocean including physics, chemistry, archeology, paleontology, sociology and geopolitics. Our ambition is to get researchers involved in the study of the oceans to work together, and to build bridges with institutional, academic and industrial partners, in France, in Europe and in the world. Among the components of the Alliance that are the most involved in the institute's actibvities are Sorbonne University and the French National Museum of Natural History. The Institute is located in Paris, but is also active along French coasts thanks to the five maritime stations of Dinard, Roscoff, Concarneau, Banyuls and Villefranche-sur-Mer. The FrenchNaval School and the French Navy are associated with the Ocean Institute. Our institute was created by the Alliance Sorbonne University as a response to United Nations' Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
