Institute Of Process Imaging

Institute Of Process Imaging company information, Employees & Contact Information

The Institute of Process Imaging (IPI) was founded in 2020 by Prof. Alexander Penn. Our institute is home to a worldwide unique large-bore vertical MRI scanner, that was specifically designed for the study of process engineering systems. At IPI, we develop advanced imaging techniques based on magnetic resonance, enabling us to quantify the spatial distribution of phases, flow dynamics, temperature, diffusion parameters, and chemical composition in large multiphase systems. Our state-of-the-art MRI scanner can accommodate columnar samples up to 400 mm in diameter and several meters in height, making it ideal for analyzing complex process engineering setups such as fluidized beds, bubble columns, contactors, pipelines, rotating packed beds, and stirred tank reactors. The hardware was designed and built by the institute in cooperation with Tesla Engineering Ltd and Philips Healthcare. The system was co-funded by the DFG under the Major Research Instrumentation program and supported by the City of Hamburg. IPI collaborates with several institutes within the TUHH, as well as with leading researchers from ETH Zürich, Columbia University, and Osaka University.
