About KEK
The High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) is a world-leading research institute with campuses in Tsukuba city and Tokai village, Japan, dedicated to advancing fundamental science across particle physics, nuclear physics, materials science, and life sciences. KEK operates cutting-edge particle accelerators to create high-energy states of electrons and protons, enabling groundbreaking discoveries that address the most compelling questions in a wide range of fields and technological innovation. Established in 1997 in a reorganization of the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics (founded in 1971) and two institutes of the University of Tokyo, KEK serves as a center of excellence for domestic and foreign researchers, providing a wide variety of research opportunities. At KEK, we are committed to driving innovation for sustainable growth in science and technology. Our experimental and theoretical research extends from probing the fundamental structure of matter to applications in energy, medicine, and materials development. As a key player in ‘Accelerator science’ in the Asia-Oceania region, KEK actively collaborates with research institutes worldwide, strengthening global scientific partnerships. As a core organization of the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI), KEK plays a crucial role in training the next generation of scientists, equipping students and researchers with the expertise to pioneer new frontiers in particle and nuclear physics, materials structure science, and accelerator science. With a dynamic community of over 700 scientists, engineers, and students, KEK attracts nearly 100,000 national and international researchers every year (measured in total person-days), offering state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional opportunities for scientific discovery. Follow us for updates on breakthrough research, global collaborations, and advancements in accelerator science!
