The term 'Energy' occupies a privileged position within contemporary discourse about health and healing, by way of being equally integral to the language of science that underpins medical practice, and the paradigmatic vocabulary of folk medicine. In a scientific context, the term 'Energy' signifies a natural phenomenon manifested through such forms as heat and motion, sound and light, which can be measured. When used in the context of folk medicine, the term 'Energy' signifies an ineffable quality unavailable to observation and measure by the scientific method, but identifiable through the subjectivity of personal experience. The vast number of individuals who attribute improved perceived well-being in response to modalities most often described as forms of 'Energy Healing' has encouraged many physicians to consider their potential benefits. Notwithstanding, such modalities are simultaneously scientifically identified as placebos, due to lack of evidence for the 'Energy' on which they allegedly depend. Furthermore, 'Energy' persists as a notion by which many people conceptualize their interactions with others as a process of exchanging a vital substance, usually perceived as either positive or negative, with pleasant or unpleasant outcomes.
