The main objective of the ATEMPO project, co-financed by the European Union through the Spain-Portugal Interreg Cooperation Program (POCTEP) 2021-2027, is to improve the response to cross-border emergencies between Spain and Portugal. This project seeks to reduce response times and prevent catastrophes related to climate change and other natural and technological risks that threaten the Euroregion's ecosystems.
To achieve this, ATEMPO promotes innovation through the use of tools such as artificial intelligence (AI), isochron maps and accident prediction systems based on deep learning techniques. The project also involves the joint training of hundreds of emergency responders and the establishment of a common certification framework for emergency management qualification between Spain and Portugal. In addition, it involves investment in equipment to increase the effectiveness of emergency response and improve the awareness and training of the population to face emergencies related to climate change.
ATEMPO, classified as an operation of strategic importance by the POCTEP 2021-2027 Monitoring Committee, will involve a total investment of close to 5 million euros, indirectly benefiting more than 9 million inhabitants. The project is led by the Axencia Galega de Emerxencias (Axega) and involves the participation of several Spanish and Portuguese institutions, including the Dirección General de Patrimonio Natural y Política Forestal de la Junta de Castilla y León, the Universidade de A Coruña, the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Alto Minho (CIM Alto Minho), the Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Norte, the Instituto Nacional de Emergência Medica (INEM), the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção Civil and the Garda Nacional Republicana (GNR).
