L'Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL) a été créé en 1995 par Gérard Mégie, ancien président du CNRS. L'IPSL est une fédération de recherche qui regroupe en région Île-de-France 8 labos et 3 équipes associées (CEREA, GEOPS, LATMOS, LISA, LMD, LOCEAN, LSCE, METIS, MONARIS, LERMA, S&R), soit près de 1400 personnes, chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs, ingénieurs, techniciens et agents administratifs, doctorants, post-doctorants et stagiaires. Ces laboratoires sont aujourd’hui implantés sur près d’une dizaine de sites à Paris et en région parisienne. Ils s’appuient sur les Observatoires des Sciences de l’Univers franciliens (OVSQ, ECCE TERRA, EFFLUVE, OSUPS). Le rôle de l’IPSL est défini par référence à des thématiques scientifiques clefs. Ce sont : • des thématiques qui ont en commun le mot « climat » : études des fluctuations et mécanismes climatiques naturels, étude des changements climatiques passés (paléoclimatologie), étude des changements climatiques d’origine anthropique et de leurs impacts ; • des thématiques liées à l’étude des grands cycles biogéochimiques, et concernant la qualité de l’eau, de l’air et des sols : cycle de l’eau bien sûr, mais aussi cycles du carbone et des gaz à effet de serre, de l’azote, de l’ozone, des polluants, des aérosols dans l’atmosphère, et des composants bio- et géochimiques dans les océans et sur les continents ; • l’étude du système solaire et de ses autres planètes. L’action de l’IPSL permet d’aborder des thématiques scientifiques qui seraient d’un accès difficile pour chacun de ses laboratoires isolément. Il apporte pour cela la coordination et l’aide nécessaire au développement d’outils communs : modélisation, observations, archives de données et de simulations, distribution de ces données, sites Web et action de communication, gestion de projets… L’IPSL est lauréat de l’appel d’offre EUR du CGI. La Climate Graduate School (IPSL-CGS), coordonnée par Sorbonne Université, implique l’ensemble de la communauté IPSL.
