About Cardiff Centre for AI, Robotics and Human-Machine Systems (IROHMS)
The Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Human-Machine Systems (IROHMS) is a world-class research environment that facilitates innovative, cutting-edge research. We focus our research on many sectors of global strategic importance, including digital manufacturing and robotics, human factors and cognitive psychology, mobile and social computing, artificial intelligence (AI). We have built on our renowned research excellence from three of Cardiff University’s schools: School of Engineering, School of Computer Science and Informatics, and School of Psychology. By bringing together this collective expertise under one banner, we have maximised our expertise by driving forward innovations that tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges. We are part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through Welsh Government, and Cardiff University. Our centre aims to target new opportunities emerging within artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and human-machine systems, with an ambition to develop fundamental and applied knowledge and to train future experts in challenging multidisciplinary areas. We have established four research themes which encompass a broad spectrum of priorities. Each research theme comprises an interdisciplinary team of academics with expertise in these fields, forming working groups to collaboratively address research challenges of strategic importance: Human-Like AI (encompassing Affective Computing, Augmented Cognition, Computational Semantics) Ethical and Explainable AI (encompassing Ethical AI, Explainable AI, Trusted Autonomy) Human-Centred Technologies and Society (encompassing Human-Centred Computing, Human-Centred Cyber Security, Emerging Technology and Society) Humans and Robots (encompassing Human-Centred Robotics, Social Robotics, Robot Perception/Learning).
