I help teachers to overcome self-doubt so that they can start their own business. I understand the fears that creep in when teachers imagine a life beyond teaching. It’s our identity, our routine, our familiarity; it’s been our stability, our purpose, and for many of us it’s all we’ve ever known since uni days. The job provides us with financial independence, and there’s a pride that goes with saying ‘I’m a teacher.’. Teaching also causes us huge anguish. We work evenings and compromise time with our kids, we burn the candle both ends, we often feel undervalued, inadequately supported and unappreciated. The system often fails us, we are exhausted, we crawl towards the next holiday where we may get some respite, before getting going again. The job is all-consuming, we are constantly dealing with negative behaviour, and the parents are often as abusive and entitled as the students. We spend our days trying to teach many students who are simply not interested. But we became teachers because we wanted to make a difference. We wanted to inspire others, and pass on our passion for our subject matter to the next generation. But teaching has changed. You know you don’t want to carry on doing it until retirement, and you have a business idea that could incorporate other skills and passions. You keep coming back to this idea. It excites you but it scares you to think of setting up a business at the same time. You might fail. Others might judge you. Are you good enough?
