Local self-government directly shapes the reality closest to the citizens. During the first 25 years of the Polish transformation, it was in this area that the most significant changes took place. The successful self-government reform in 1999 only confirmed that the more decisions are made in local communities, the more effective they are and respond to actual needs. Efficient management in conjunction with European funds helped to overcome civilization delays and essential infrastructure deficiencies.In Poland, it is visible that it directly shapes the reality closest to the citizens. Not only large agglomerations but also smaller towns underwent incredible transformations. Thus, our cities can already compete without complexes with their counterparts from Western Europe. Today's local government is facing new challenges. The most important tasks of modern cities are creating a space-friendly environment for residents and investors and developing an intelligent urban fabric. The synergy of modern and pro-ecological technologies with comfortable, aesthetic, and inhabitants-friendly agglomerations should be the current direction of their development. These ideas underlie the establishment of the Self-Government Institute, which in its genesis is a scientific and research think tank gathering experienced people with a vision of modern metropolises. With our work, we want to help create efficient urban spaces that will serve local societies. Time for the city 2.0!
