The Institute for the Law of the Sea and International Marine Environmental Law (ISRIM) is an independent legal research institute, which was established in 2012. The Institute cooperates with various national and international scientific and research institutions.
Research Projects and Publications: The Institute prepares scientific opinions, and participates in German and EU multidisciplinary public research projects. Our research and the methods applied cover a wide range from basic and applied research to science-based advice at the highest level. The results of our research are made available to the scientific community and the interested public through our publications and audiovisual media.
Research areas: With its in-depth expertise in the law of the sea and international marine environmental law our research focuses in particular on the legal implications of maritime technologies (e.g. offshore wind energy, deep sea-bed mining) and of marine biotechnology (e.g. marine genetic resources).
Purpose and aims of our research: With our research we want to further develop the law of the sea and its concepts which are necessary to protect and preserve the marine environment for future generations in time of the triple planetary crisis. At the same time we give legal advise on a responsible and sustainable use of the seas and oceans, including the exploration for and exploitation of the natural resources in compliance with the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the BBNJ Agreement and other international treaties and regulations in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).
Teaching and lecturing: The Institute participates in academic teaching, and public lecturing in the research areas of the Institute. Since 2015 the Institute co-operates with the University of Genoa, Italy in organizing the Summer School on the European Union and the Law of the Sea (EULoS). For more information: www.eu-los.eu.
