About Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center
The Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC) in the City of San Fernando, Province of La Union, has seen a significant increase in its capacity, thanks to Republic Act No. 11724. This legislation increases the bed capacity of ITRMC from 300 to 800 beds, aimed at improving healthcare services and facilities to accommodate a larger number of patients. The Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center, known as the people's hospital and the people's home for health in Region 1, has been serving the Ilocanos and adjacent areas for 79 years. Our story began in 1945 as a 40-bed first aid medical facility under the auspices of the US 6th Infantry Division. It became the La Union Provincial Hospital in 1946 and was later named Ilocos Regional Hospital in 1992, authorized to operate as a 200-bed healthcare institution through Republic Act 7364. The facility was renamed the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center and expanded to a 300-bed facility through the enactment of Republic Act 8411 in November 1997, reflecting its continuous growth in health services. It is situated on a 4.7-hectare lot in Parian, City of San Fernando, La Union, the seat of regional government offices and the springboard of economic development in Northern Luzon. Our health human resource is primarily composed of a millennial intergenerational workforce with a clan-type organizational culture. The provision of health and social services operates in silos across levels of the workforce, joined by four strong division chiefs—medical, nursing, administrative, and finance. We are an ISO-certified institution and one of the few DOH-retained hospitals outside Metro Manila with 11 fully accredited residency training programs. As such, we are continually expanding our current 54 sub-specialty services, with our allied professionals to strengthen the pillars of universal healthcare, offering a service-learning opportunity for our wide array of stakeholders.
