ITU-GEOHAZARD RESEARCH GROUP

Geohazards, such as landslides, floods, wildfires, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, can have destructive effects on populations, economies and landscapes around the world. Our research interests focus on understanding the complex response of the landscape to the major triggering events (i.e. earthquakes, volcanic activities, extreme rainfalls), the feedback mechanisms therein, and further use this knowledge to predict the locations, impacts and frequencies of hazards. We use a combination of detailed conceptional, dynamic, physically-based and statistical models, field studies and laboratory measurements to understand how landscapes respond to geohazards in different tectonic, climatic, natural and geologic environments. Our research spans a broad range of topics from regional to global scale, and cover various geographical regions, from studies of significant geomorphic, geologic and meteorological impacts of disasters in Anatolia, Caucasus, Patagonia and Antarctica.
