Institut für Universal Design

Universal design − more than ever, it is a strategy for rising to the challenges affecting society as a whole through design. The universal design expert conference already stated in its Weimar Declaration from 2009 that this insight is the basis of the great responsibility to sensibly combine the aspects of functionality, ergonomics, the right choice of materials, the need to visualize intended use and user interfaces − all while incorporating aesthetic concerns. We still firmly believe that products, architecture and services must be translated into future-proof, commercially viable and results-driven strategies. Companies, start-ups and students alike should embrace these tasks. The Institute for Universal Design aims to serve as a moderator and networking provider, and its mission is clear: to build bridges between industry, the start-up scene and universities and to expand them in a scientific and commercially viable manner. Universal design has since moved beyond a mere design perspective to become a truly overarching issue. The first steps have already been taken, but the complex questions requiring discussion still remain. The Institute for Universal Design is therefore coming up with various projects.
