IWK Pharmacy

IWK Health is a hospital and trauma center focused on the care of pediatrics and women in the Maritimes. We are the only such center within Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. We provide a wide range of services, including Children’s Health, Mental Health and Addictions, and Women’s and Newborn Health. We are leaders in perinatal care, delivering 4,587 babies last year, as well as emergency pediatric care, with 32,953 visits to our emergency department in a single year. With primary, secondary and tertiary care, we provide a wide range of patient care. The pharmacy department within IWK Health works as medication experts in women’s and pediatric health. Our role involves dispensing medications for use within the hospital, working with other healthcare team members to provide collaborative patient care, and being resources for healthcare providers and the public in medication use management. Our specialized services include antimicrobial stewardship (with the launching of the Firstline App), drug information (with resources for practice such as non-sterile compounding formulas) drug use evaluation, clinical trial support, production and packaging and sterile products (such as Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and chemotherapy). We also engage in research and teaching, while taking one PGY1 resident yearly beginning in 2018.
