Addiction is a Jewish issue. We’re working to address it. Millions of individuals grapple every hour of every day with addiction. This disease is having a devastating impact on entire communities – including Jewish communities. JAAN’s mission is to increase understanding of the disease of addiction and decrease stigma by connecting individuals, families, and professionals across the Jewish spectrum in order to explore the intersection of Judaism and recovery, exchange resources, and support those in crisis. While battling addiction, Jewish individuals and families must also confront the stigma and shame associated with this widely misunderstood disease. The myth that Jews do not suffer from addiction as much as other groups often leaves families and individuals feeling disconnected from their friends, congregations, and communities. JAAN is working to change that. JAAN works to share strategies and best practices from a Jewish perspective. We help Jewish organizations, agencies, professionals, and synagogues leverage Jewish traditions and knowledge to better understand addiction and support those living with it. Here’s how we do it: • Comprehensive website featuring online resource directory for Jewish community programs, a Jewish voices blog, recommended reading, and more • Community education, outreach, and consulting services • Guidance to synagogues and Jewish organizations in working with recovery program members to establish recovery meetings that are open to people from all faiths and backgrounds • Speaking engagements, workshops and presentations • Integration of addiction and recovery themes in synagogue programming and services • JAAN is also available to create a custom event or program for your organization, congregation, or group, or to participate in an event you already have planned.
