Jeremiah Higgins

Jeremiah Higgins is Ireland's oldest family-run shop, proudly serving the west of Ireland since 1820. Founded by Patrick Higgins, the shop has been passed down through generations, preserving its history and traditions. Patrick’s son Thomas inherited the shop, followed by his son Jeremiah, whose daughters, Eileen and Delia, left their father’s name proudly displayed over the door to honour his legacy. Over the years, the shop has stood witness to remarkable historical events, including the 1840s Irish Famine, the 1916 Easter Rising, and both World Wars. Through the dedication of its caretakers, it has remained not only a business but a landmark of Irish heritage and resilience. The shop was revitalised in 2016 by the latest generation, focusing on a thoughtful preservation of its legacy in modern Ireland. While the shop's dual counters, heavy wooden door, and gramophone remain intact, its offerings have evolved. We’ve been gathering treasures for generations, each with an old-world charm, wrapped in an elegant bow, on Main Street since 1820.
