Modern meditation is associated with incremental changes like improved focus or reduction in stress, but advanced meditators have long used meditation for more than incremental change. They describe transformative healing and wellbeing. The jhanas are a series of meditative states associated with extraordinary peace and joy. They provide a sense of bliss without the negative side effects of recreational drugs, such as crashes, withdrawals, and addiction. Practitioners often describe the jhanas as “life-changing,” and report new abilities to direct attention, work through past trauma, and even “splash” joy or peace into everyday experience. Brain images suggest these people have learned to turn on the pleasure centers in their brain at will and without external stimuli. Despite their benefits, the jhanas can be difficult to master. At Jhourney, we aim to make jhanas more accessible with more accessible teaching methods and non-invasive neurotech. We offer online and in-person retreats for people to learn how to access these states on command with a meditation skills built around experimentation, kindness, and joy that they can use for a lifetime.
