JiTiBa Algae Technologies

We are a cleantech startup led by students from the HAN University of Applied Sciences. Our mission: to help solve the nitrogen crisis in the Netherlands and help water boards meet the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) using a sustainable and cost-effective solution: microalgae. We develop algae farms (photobioreactors) that clean polluted water from various sources by absorbing excess nitrogen and phosphorus. Our system reduces the need for expensive sludge processing, turning wastewater into valuable resources like biofuels and biofertilizers. We clean wastewater and -sludge from treatment plants, but also plan to clean up nutrient-polluted rivers,and effluent from agriculture and industry. Our technology offers both environmental and economic benefits, by saving operational costs, eliminating the risks of fines and legal consequences of polluted wastewater and by decreasing water pollution. Next to removal of contaminans like nitrate, ammonia and phosphate, we also plan to further develop our technology for the removal of heavy metals, medicine-remains and PFAS from wastewater! We are currently building and testing Proof of Concept (POC) systems. Our early-stage pilots have already shown successful phosphate, nitrate and ammonia absorption. Also, we- and our founder, have already been nominated for several awards, including the Most Innovative Student of The Netherlands and the HAN Changemakers award.
