Johnson Geo Centre

The Johnson Geo Centre opened in 2002 as a geological interpretation centre. The vision for the Centre was developed by Paul Johnson and the Johnson Family Foundation, to highlight the unique and remarkable geological features of Newfoundland and Labrador as “Earth’s Geological Showcase.” No other easily-reached place on the planet has a geological record that so fully reveals the history of the Earth, going back almost to its birth over 4.5 billion years ago. In 2019 Geo was gifted to Memorial University by the Johnson Family Foundation and is recognized as the province's premier science centre. The primary focus of the exhibits remains geological, including natural resources development, enhanced with exhibits on space, ocean corals, the science behind mythical creatures, our fascinating local fossil record, and more. As an academic support unit of Memorial University, we provide teaching, learning, and research supports to academic units. We also partner with faculty, graduate students, and student academic societies to create spaces for them to share their research with a broader, public audience through lectures, workshops, and participation in public open house events. As a public facing science centre and popular local attraction, we welcome visitors from home and abroad to bring their curiosity and spark excitement about science and technology. We have been recognized as one of the top 10% of “Things to Do” worldwide in Tripadvisor’s 2025 Travellers’ Choice Awards. Aren’t You Curious?
