jua kali Ltd. (pronounced ju-wah kah-lee) evolved out of Master’s level research in 2011, investigating the feasibility of establishing a Resource Recovery programme in an urban poor community in Saint Lucia, as a means of addressing the lack/inadequate solid waste management services.
In many developing countries, the poor see waste as a resource and re-purpose the scraped material to produce goods that they may sell or use themselves, thereby creating sustainable livelihoods.
These informal artisans who have established entire ecosystems from scrap sourcing to repair are known as “jua kali” in Kenya, “Catadores” in Brazil, and the “Zabbaleen” in Egypt (to name a few).
While searching for a name to capture the essence of this Resource Recovery company, it seemed only fitting to pay homage to a group of people whose innovation, creativity and resourcefulness inspired its establishment in the first place.
Jua Kali Ltd. was incorporated in the in the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia in August 2014.
