33 Years ago, a few brave souls sat at the steps of our nation’s Capitol. They came there hoping to let Congress know that the time had come for Disabled people to have equal access to public spaces.
When they arrived, they were met with the structural barrier of the capitol steps.
Undeterred, the activists left their wheelchairs and mobility devices and crawled up those steps. They made their voice heard, and thanks to them, I have been afforded the right to education and employment.
In honor of their work and the many Disabled Queer Black Indigenous and POC lives that we have lost to hate and injustice, I am proud to announce the founding of a new civil rights organization.
Just Us Civil Rights will serve as a community bridge. Our model begins by providing human rights service navigation, we then will support our clients, who are among the most disenfranchised, to organize against our unjust systems.
