kahoko is a cross cultural, cross knowledge experience. We work together with artisans from the Rift Valley, Kenya, combining traditional techniques with contemporary designs.
We aim to operate as a socially and environmentally sustainable business. Proceeds from our products are injected directly back into the artisan's community, and all material used to create kahoko products, from spinning, dyeing, to weaving & knitting, are 100% natural.

Kahoko’s story begins in Kenya’s rural Rift Valley, where in Njoro, women gather as knitters to take charge of their lives through dignified work. Elsewhere in the Rift Valley, rug weavers run a cotton warp and wool weft system to craft handmade rug, Every row carefully constructed, stitch by stitch. In Kisumu, a group of fourteen weavers work in an airy studio buffeted by the breeze off Lake Victoria, creating goods with traditional handlooms and ikat dye techniques. These artisans developed their craft through time, and many techniques, like the use of natural dyes,
have been passed on through the generations. Kahoko and these knitters, weavers, spinner, & dyers began their exchange in 2013 when founder & designer Laura Coppen spent five months both teaching & learning from each other. From that, they have woven a lasting relationship in crafting well designed textiles.
Fibres and dyes used in kahoko’s products are 100% natural. Wool & cotton are gathered from nearby sustainably operated farms then handspan with homemade spinners. We colour our yarns only with sustainably farmed plants or natural weeds to produce natural dyes with no harmful byproducts.
The kahoko leaf - the leaf of our namesake - is used to produce a yellow or pale tan coloured fibre.
