District Council of Karoonda East Murray

The District Council of Karoonda East Murray is dedicated to serving the community of Karoonda and surrounding areas, located in the heart of South Australia's Murray Mallee region. Established in 1979 through the amalgamation of the District Councils of Karoonda and East Murray, the Council’s role is to govern, manage, and support the region’s development while preserving its rich history and unique environment. Karoonda, the district’s major township, has a proud agricultural heritage. Since its founding in 1911, the region has been a hub for dryland farming, with a focus on broadacre grain and wool production. Today, the district embraces modern, sustainable farming practices that ensure continued productivity. The Council is led by a Mayor and six elected members, representing the district’s residents and ratepayers. With its offices located at 11 Railway Terrace, Karoonda. Nestled in a region rich in history, the district continues to evolve, balancing tradition with progress, and making it a unique place to live, work, and visit.
