Keep Them Warm is an initiative started by a group of students based in Leiden. Our main goal is to bring necessary products to the Polish/Ukrainian border, provide humanitarian aid, and provide Ukrainian refugees with transport back to the Netherlands and a safe place to stay. Below is a slightly longer explanation of how we came to be and what our goals are.
When the war broke out in Ukraine, we heard a lot of noises about feelings of powerlessness among the student population. Many of them wanted to help out, but didn't have enough money to make significant contributions. We didn't know what we could do beyond our local fundraiser events, until the initiator came in contact with On My Way UA, who assured us that we could definitely do more! The first group of nine students set out for the Polish/Ukrainian border two weeks later with the intention of delivering necessary food, hygiene items, and clothing, assisting refugees in crossing the border for a week, and bringing 18 refugees back to the Netherlands with them.
What started as a one-time trip is now an initiative that we want to make much greater. The harsh winter that was awaiting Ukraine along with the escalating energy shortages and the fact that the news about the war was fading to the background, motivated us to launch "Keep Them Warm" in November. The idea is to keep the people of Ukraine, and the news surrounding the war, warm.
With our initiative we hope to provide a wide range of students with the resources and information they need to make an impact of their own. Our next trips are already scheduled for January and February and our team of volunteers is growing. We do still need a significant amount of funding in order to be able to cover the costs of renting the buses, fuel, and specific needed supplies (in addition to the general products we gather).
