Parkinson's disease is becoming a worldwide epidemic. It is now estimated that 7-10 million people worldwide have the disorder, and the numbers are unfortunately developing progressively.
Parkinson's was discovered over 200 years ago. Nevertheless, the disease can still not be cured, nor can the increasing decline be slowed down. There is only the chance to reduce the symptoms. We still seem to be a long way from a vaccination against Parkinson's disease.
Although research has now well investigated the processes in the body, pharma-funded incentivisation continues mainly in the area of treating the symptoms. Exactly why the idiopathic (without a cause) Parkinson's variant develops remains unclear.
To fight an enemy, because that is how we see the disease, we need to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the disease.
That is why we, as Parkinson's patients, have talked to various neurologists and Parkinson's experts. We asked them what could enable research into the causes of the disease, the development of a cure or a vaccination.
Much more comprehensive and available patient data for research was one of the keys mentioned.
At first glance, researchers today have greatly improved ways of evaluating "big data" through digitisation & AI. On the other hand, data protection regulations continue to increase and it is difficult for researchers to access larger and multidisciplinary patient data.
This is unacceptable for us as Parkinson's patients. Our goal is to wipe out Parkinson's and we donate as much of our data as possible for this purpose.
www.kill-parkinson.org will enable Parkinson's patients and relatives to anonymously provide information about their life and illness history, which we will make available "open source" for research.
