About Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg (KZA)
The Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community welcomes you to the ancestral unceded lands of the Algonquin Anishinabeg. Our territory covers a large portion of Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec and continues to be occupied by the Algonquin Anishinabeg. Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg was established in 1853 on the traditional hunting grounds of Chief Antoine Pakinawatik. Kitigan Zibi is a thriving First Nation community which forms the gateway to the town of Maniwaki QC and is the heart and beat of this territory. The Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg population presently sits at 3,493 members and continues to grow. The community covers 18,437 hectares of reserve land and is the largest of the 11 Algonquin communities both in territory and membership. There are over 22 lakes located in the community with the artificial boundaries being the Eagle River to the West, the Desert River to the North, and the Gatineau River to the East. The Algonquin, English, and French languages continue to be used in the community. The community is located an enjoyable 135 kilometers car/bus ride north of Ottawa/Gatineau and is accessible North by using Highway 105. Our community prides itself in the many accomplishments over the past 165+ years. These achievements are founded in the knowledge and belief that the community must be the master of its own destiny. This has led to a greater control over our community services that are established for the membership. As a result, Kitigan Zibi is home to over 50 enterprises within the community. A Kitigan Zibi owned and operated maple syrup operation called Awazibi Pure Maple Syrup offers the sweet taste of Algonquin Anishinabe traditional diet to world markets. The community hosts an Annual Traditional Pow Wow on the first week-end of June where Algonquin Anishinabeg pride is celebrated. The powerful beat of the drum songs, dance styles, Anishinabe cuisine, and craft vendors make this an event not to be missed.
