Lifeguarding Service and Accesses/Facilities The Town of Kitty Hawk is located on a barrier island chain, "the Outer Banks", in Northeast North Carolina. The water off our coast, the Atlantic Ocean, is otherwise known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for its numerous shipwrecks. US Lifesaving Service can trace much if its history to the area. Kitty Hawk Lifesaving Station was "Number 6" and is where the telegraph of "First Flight" occurred. Kitty Hawk Ocean Rescue is a division of the Kitty Hawk Fire Department and dispatched through 911. Kitty Hawk Ocean Rescue is an USLA Advanced Agency certified. Lifeguard Stands: Are staffed from Saturday of Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day. Located at Byrd Street, Eckner Street, and Kitty Hawk Bathhouse (300 yards south of Kitty Hawk Road) Roving Patrols: ATV patrols are staffed from Saturday of Memorial day to September 30. Hours of Operation: Saturday of Memorial day until Labor day manned from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Labor Day until September 30 ATV patrols from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Time may vary due to inclement weather Can be activated 24 hours a day by dialing 911 RED FLAGS are flown to indicate dangerous conditions. Swimming, bathing, and wading is prohibited and punishable by a $250.00 fine.
