Kivu Power

The project is part of a strategy for the Congolese government to reduce the risks related to the high concentration of methane in Lake Kivu, due to the interaction of its water with the Nyiragongo Volcano. To mitigate this risk, the authorities of the DRC lanched an international tender in 2014 for a project that could contribute to the absorption of methane from Kivu Lake and valorise the gas to produce electricity. EPPM was awarded the project, and a framework contract was signed. Since its award at the end of 2017, EPPM has pursued the development of the Project which has now obtained almost all regulatory approvals necessary to launch the construction of the Project. It will benefit from a (i) 27-years power to purchase agreement with Congolese state-owned utility SNEL at a fixed tariff indexed annually, a (ii) a 30-year gas concession agreement and (iii) a 30-year electricity generation license. EPPM has also conducted an environmental and social study of the Project, which has been approved bu the Congolese authorities, prepared a front-end engineering design, and secured the 6Ha onshore land necessary to build toe power plant.
