Kiviõli Keemiatööstus (Kiviõli Chemical Plant, hereafter ‘KKT’) belongs to Alexela Group and mainly produces shale oil and generates heat and electrical energy. The company was founded in 1922, and its production units are in Kiviõli City, Ida-Viru County. KKT quarries oil shale in the Põhja-Kiviõli Quarry and produces up to 65,000 tonnes of crude shale oil a year. Cogenerated heat and electrical energy covers the needs of both the company itself as well as the heating need of Kiviõli City. The electrical energy KKT generates is used by the company itself and sent to the transmission network as well. Of the limestone that comes with oil shale, KKT makes chippings. KKT employs almost 700 people, mostly from Kiviõli City.
