Committed to a greener future, KOBENSAC is a design focused company based in Copenhagen, Denmark, that upcycles landfill-bound plastic construction tarps to create bespoke solutions for a variety of everyday needs. From usable waste systems to fashion forward tote bags, KOBENSAC devises ways to upcycle plastic construction tarps that are, normally, disposed of following a single use. By creating new and usable products with these tarps, KOBENSAC not only prolongs the use of existing materials, but also aims to prevent the further production of environmentally unfriendly plastic. Furthermore, KOBENSAC works to support individuals on the edge of the Danish labor market by providing jobs to those that, for a variety of reasons, have found it difficult to maintain employment. Demonstrating that upcycled products need not sacrifice quality or aesthetics, KOBENSAC designs are flexible and durable but, also, true to Danish design principles by maintaining form and function with clean shapes that utilize the geometric pattern of the reinforced plastic. In addition to manufacturing most of our products at our sewing shop in Copenhagen, KOBENSAC collaborates with other socially responsible sewing workshops in Denmark to not only support the local labor market, but to also protect the environment by avoiding the transport of goods from foreign factories. KOBENSAC believes that businesses have an obligation to do whatever is possible to slow down and reverse the catastrophic course of global warming. Through the upcycling of used construction tarps to create new and usable products with a design focus for everyday life, KOBENSAC is demonstrating a commitment to that obligation while, at the same time, proving that it is possible for successful businesses to be environmentally and socially responsible.
