The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), India’s largest contemporary art festival, is held every two years across the historic neighborhoods of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. It is organised by the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF), a nonprofit cultural organisation founded in 2010 and based in Kerala, dedicated to promoting art, heritage, and education through contemporary visual practices.
Drawing from Kerala’s rich multicultural past and the mythical port of Muziris, the Biennale creates a space where global contemporary art meets local histories and traditions. With the support of the Government of Kerala, which has been a key benefactor since its inception, KMB has evolved into a major cultural and tourism landmark.
In 2012, KMB received the National Award for the Most Innovative and Unique Tourism Project in India. In 2014, Kochi was declared the “Biennale City” by its mayor, affirming the festival’s deep impact on civic and cultural life.
The sixth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is scheduled to open on Dec. 12, 2025, under the artistic direction of internationally renowned artist Nikhil Chopra, in collaboration with HH Art Spaces, the artist collective and movement he co-founded in 2014. The announcement was made by the Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, in the presence of the Minister for Tourism, P.A. Mohammed Riyas, in Thiruvananthapuram on November 20, 2024.
