Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT)

The Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT) is an international project building the world’s first research and drilling infrastructure to access magma and the surrounding superheated/supercritical geothermal environment. Located at Krafla volcano in Iceland, KMT is focused on advancing technologies to harness supercritical geothermal energy — a potentially transformative, zero-emissions energy source. The project also supports cutting-edge research in volcanology, geoscience, and planetary processes, bringing together a global network of scientists, engineers, and industry leaders.
