Kranemann Wine Estates

Kranemann Wine Estates is a wine and wine tourism project envisaged by Christoph Kranemann, a German wine connoisseur who fell in love with the Douro and its wines. He was particularly fascinated by Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias, a flagship property located in Tabuaço, in the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. In the Távora River valley, a unique area of the Douro, where the high altitudes and granite and schist soil provide a characteristic terroir, Kranemann Wine Estates produces extraordinary DOC Douro and Port wines. They honour the history of the property, which housed monks from the Order of Cistercians, who settled on the estate back in the 12th century, contributing to the start of wine growing in the region. The DOC Douro wines, sold under the brands Quinta do Convento and Hasso, reflect the unique blend of the vineyards’ characteristics. The vines are mainly north facing and are planted in schist and granite soil at altitudes ranging from 320 to 420 metres, lending the wines great elegance, freshness and minerality, perfect for pairing with food and with an excellent ageing potential. Kranemann’s own branded Port wine also stands out due to its distinct elegance and freshness which are characteristic of the terroir. Alongside the investment in high quality wines, Kranemann Wine Estates intends to set up a wine tourism project and restore the mythical Convento de São Pedro das Águias, a building dating back to the 12th century and gives its name to the project’s main property.
