We are the only US 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated solely to protecting critically endangered African penguins from extinction. We strategically collaborate with partners in South Africa to protect critically endangered African penguins by: • bolstering the chick population and rearing abandoned or lost chicks—a vital part of the African Penguin Biodiversity Management Plan • protecting the 2,800 African penguins at the Dyer Island colony by funding its Seabird Ranger • rehabilitating injured, ill, or oiled birds • responding to emergencies or time-sensitive needs, including providing needed equipment • advocating for increased Marine Protection Areas to protect the ecosystem African penguins need to thrive • equipping African penguin populations with artificial nests African penguins are a significant economic asset, contributing R613 million-R4.5 billion ($35 million-$259 million) to the South African economy yearly and creating almost 5,000 jobs. Should the African penguin go extinct, livelihoods and human well-being will suffer. The extinction of the African Penguin would severely damage South Africa's reputation, both at home and on the global stage. As this species' legal and moral guardian, South Africa's inability to protect the penguins would mar its image as a leader in natural heritage and environmental conservation. African penguins, serving as indicator species, are sentinels of ocean health. This means the penguin population's state mirrors the overall condition of the ecosystem. Consequently, the presence, absence, or abundance of African penguins reflects the surrounding environmental conditions and any shifts in stability. Their extinction would trigger far-reaching consequences for the entire ecosystem. For many reasons, their loss is terrible to contemplate. #NotBy2035 We rely on donations (TAX ID 87-4716839)—US 501(c)(3) public nonprofit charity.
