During the design process architects generally use built architecture as reference buildings. Thus, the goal of the diverse Knowledge Support Design (KSD) Research Group from the TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF MUNICH (TUM) and GERMAN RESEARCH CENTER FOR ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE (DFKI), funded by the GERMAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION (DFG), is to support architects during the early stages of the design process using information technology to provide architectural information as a source of inspiration, design conditions, explicit information, or as a tool for evaluation and communication. In order to digitally formalise architectural information, we propose semantic building fingerprints to formalize and process spatial configurations. We use knowledge graphs to represent information, such as space and their connections, alignment, orientation and urban integration. For this purpose, we investigate AI methods, such as case-based reasoning, multiagent systems and deep learning, to apply the information in the design context, e.g. through design autocompletion. Our interdisciplinary approach includes methods of architecture and computer science, as well as approaches of explainability, human-computer-interaction and cognition.
