The Institute for Innovative Global Education (IIGE) aims to strengthen ties between Japanese and higher education institutions all over the world, particularly through virtual exchange (VE) and collaborative online international learning (COIL) initiatives. The center was established in 2018, with significant funding from Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) under the Inter-University Exchange Project, to serve as a platform and a center of expertise for VE/COIL in Japan. In addition to offering a wide range of innovative COIL programs, IIGE facilitates various professional development programs and networking opportunities for higher education institutions. IIGE also hosts the national secretariat of the JPN-COIL association, a network of 57 Japanese universities striving to expand and improve VE/COIL practices in and with Japan.
