Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) is a type of cement that is based on a blend of limestone and calcined clay. LC3 can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% in comparison with Ordinary Portland Cement. LC3 is made using unheated limestone and low-grade clays which are available in abundant quantities. It is cost effective and does not require capital intensive modifications to existing cement plants. The technology behind LC3 is in the public domain. The LC3 Project vision is for as many cement producers in the world to adopt LC3-type cement as possible, and therefore at scale to mitigate global warming and provide a more affordable solution to house a growing world population. The LC3 Project is funded by philanthropic support and does not commercialize cement. The LC3 Project, based at Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, operates with a team of partners.
