Lions Clubs International is a global service organization founded in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois by Melvin Jones. It has over 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 local clubs across 200 countries and geographic areas. The organisation's motto is "We Serve" and its local clubs engage in a variety of community service projects, including sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, and environmental issues. Notable members of Lions Clubs International include former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Sir Edmund Hillary. The youth wing of Lions Clubs International is called Leo Clubs. Leos are young people aged 12-30 who embody the organization's values of "Leadership, Experience, Opportunity." There are over 200,000 Leos in more than 7,700 Leo clubs across 150+ countries and territories. Leos engage in over 60,000 service projects each year. They have opportunities to serve as club officers, district and multiple district leaders, and representatives on the Leo Club Program Advisory Panel. Leos can also transition to become Leo-Lion members as they age out of the program. Lions Clubs International provides resources to support Leo clubs, including the Leo Club Handbook, leadership training, grant funding, and awards programs. The organisation also hosts an annual Leo video contest to showcase Leo service projects.
