Das Leibniz-Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung (IOS) ist eine der international bekanntesten und größten Forschungseinrichtungen mit Schwerpunkt östliches Europa. Am IOS arbeiten Wissenschaftler*innen u. a. aus den Fächern Geschichte, Ökonomie und Politik zusammen, um historische und aktuelle Entwicklungen in dieser Region zu erklären. Daneben beherbergt das Institut eine der weltweit größten Spezialbibliotheken mit Literatur über Ost- und Südosteuropa, ebenso betreut es namhafte Buchreihen und Fachzeitschriften. Das IOS, dessen Geschichte bis 1930 zurückreicht, ist Mitglied der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft und wird vom Bund und vom Freistaat Bayern finanziert.
