There are 574 recognized Tribal Nations and many urban Native American communities in the Untied States but most people know very little about them. This knowledge gap underlies almost all of the difficulties that arise in project development, financing, and Tribal consultation. By understanding the basics of Tribal cultures, histories, and laws (Spoiler alert: it's more than headdresses, turquoise, and stoicism), we help our Tribal and non-Tribal clients create better processes for Tribal engagement and provide strategic advice on the development of projects and economic development within and impacting Indian Country. At Lepwe, we are bridging the gap between Tribal Nations and non-Native entities (like developers, investors, foundations, and government agencies) by: - facilitating education and training; - supporting strategic engagement; and - clarifying Tribal metrics for equity permitting and investing (including ESG, EJ, and Justice 40).
